Phil and Dolly moved to SA as Phil was employed by the Adelaide Steamship Company, involved in the Australian Coastal Shipping Industry- with their headquaters in Adelaide.

During WW1 Phil was in service aboard the S.S. Karoola, which was used first as a Transport ship and later as a Hospital Ship.

Clifton married Dorothy Clara Lockwood, daughter of Frederick Nicholas Churcher Lockwood and Emma Atkins, in St Pauls, Anglican Church, Rose Bay, Nsw, Australia.⁷¹ (Dorothy Clara Lockwood was born on 10 Oct 1899 in Granville, NSW, Australia,⁷¹ died on 5 Aug 1993 in Endeavour Nursing Home, Kograh, NSW, Australia ⁷¹ and was buried in Woronora Crematoria, NSW, Australia- ashes scattered. ⁷¹.)
