Irene entred the Salvation Training College in Melbourne in 1919.
On graduation her first appointment was to the Melbourne People's Palace and then followed a long list of appointments. Irene served at such places as Inglewood, Canterbury, Coburg, Newport, Dimboola, Port Adelaide and Goodwood- in total 27 appointments.
In 1948 the then Sen-Major Russell, was appointed to Bethesda Hosptial for one of her longest appointments- three and a half years. This was followed by four months in the Melbourne Trade department and then an appointment to the socials service centre in Melbourne.
Irene retired in 1955 after 35 years in the service.
