Notes for MARIA LEES: NOTES FROM THE BOOK "JOHN LEES THE CHAPEL BUILDER" by Merle Kavanagh:
Maria aged 14 years, married Charles Molston Gordon aged 25 years on 11th November 1816. Samuel Marsden appointed Charles as Superintendant of Agriculture in his church in New Zealand. The couple sailed on the brig "Active" for New Zealand on 1st January 1817. They were there for two and a half years. Years of hardship and danger with gun trading and other strange happenings. They returned on the "Active" on 30th November 1819. Maria was pregnant and ill - both physically and mentally. Three weeks later she was dead. Her father had the following inscribed on her tombstone" "Died in childbed. Having been frightened in New Zealand bought (sic) a weakness and violent hemorrhage terminated her existance".
