Ruth Gransden [Parents] was born on 2 Oct 1858 in Stockbury, Kent, England. She married Edward Terry.
Richard Gransden [Parents] was born 1 on 11 Oct 1859 in Stockbury, Kent, England. He died in 1947. The cause of death was Old age. He married Julia Terry.
Until richard sent for his birth certificate in 1925 to claim his old age pension he thought he had been born in 1860.
Kathleen does not know what Richard did unti the war but on his marriage certificate it says 'Smith'. When his Australian nephews came to see him during the First World War he was living at Pett Farm, near Stockbury. He was working as a Waggoner- this was a man working with farm horses. He earned 18 shillings a week (twenty shillings to the pound) an ordianary farm worker would have earned 15 shillings at that time.
Later on Richard had his own farm, quite near to Pett Farm it was called Magpie Hall. Kathleen suspects that it was his son Albert who invested in this, but she has no proof.
In September 1939 the farm was sold and they moved to a new bungalow with Kathleens parents.
Julia Terry died about 1942. The cause of death was Liver cancer. She married Richard Gransden.
When julia had her last child, Edward she was in hospital with "white leg" presumably some sort of thrombosis. The cure in those days was to break the leg and re-set it! This was done but the leg did not heal properly so they did it again and Julia was in hospital for many months.
Edward was sent home to Richard who fed him evaporated milk, he was a fat baby.
Kathleens mother (Ethel) was eight years old and had to look after Richard who was five. When at school Ehtel heard a teacher say that they looked dirty so Ehtel made Richard stand in the bath and she scrubbed him from top to bottom.
Julia had diabetes for the later part of her life- controlled through diet. Since her leg had been broken she could not walk very well. She taught Kathllen to read and write, knit and sew long before Kathllen went to school.

Kathleen Welch remembers Phillis and William as lovely friendly people who used to visit Magpie Hall. The y lived at Plumstead near London.
Phillis used to sew tenis balls before the war. Tennis balls are made of two secitons and they were sewen together by hand, a very hard job. Kathleen remembers having a lot of thimbles in the sewing box because Phillis would wear them out then they could be used for ordinary sewing.
Phillis died the same year as her brother Richard.
