After their wedding George and mabel moved to New Zealand, initially for their honeymoon. They moved back to NSW after the birth of their first child.

1905 lived in various parts of Sydney.
The return voyage from New Zealand was on the S.S. Wanganui. The trip was very rough. Mabel refused to ever set foot on a boat again, as a result of this trip. She would not even go on the Manly Ferry.

17 Feb 1908 George joined the NSW Government Railways as an Angle Ironsmith, stationed at the Railway Workshop at Eveleigh, to the western side of Redfern. George was instrumental in forming the Australian Railways union.

14 Aug 1917 George was dismissed from the Railways due to his involvement in the "Great Strike". His brother William, also working for the Railways stayed working for them (he was not so heavily involved in the union). This caused a lot of friction between the two brothers, they rarely spoke from then on.
