Much of the Hungate area, and particularly that relating to prostitution was bound on the south side by the Foss, on the West by Fossgate, on the north and nearest the city centre by a small stretch of St Saviourgate and on the east by the main thoroughfare the area (a street very much inferior to Walmage and Fossgate) Hungate itself. In this small and unpleasant neighbourhood were situated all the Wesley Place terraces, Garden Place, Carmelite Street, Rusby Place and various yards and small streets branching from the other side of Hungate such as Bradley's Buildings, and Haver Lane- each of which housed prostitutes in the period.
