General Notes:
Hannah Bliss was the daughter of Thomas Dawson. The Dawson's had two brick pits at Kelso during the same time as the Horner's and Blisses lived there. This is shown in the book "Kelso Village" Book 1. by Alan McRae and Carol Churches. Page 9 shows the location of the Dawson pits. The book also mentions briefly the names of some the Blisses and Horner's.
Occupation listed on the marriage register for Hannah and George was Servant. On the birth certificate for son Arthur James Bliss it shows Hannah's place of birth as Grafton, Northamptonshire, England and her age as 27 years.
Hannah and husband George are believed to have raised at least their first five children at Kelso until late 1874 or early 1875 when the occupied the house on Howick Street section 100. Their daughter Jane certainly had her first year at this house then the family moved to the land and house which George had purchased some time in late 1875 or early 1876 in section 102. This is where the rest of George and Hannah Bliss's children were born as they were still in the brick home of two rooms in 1883.
By the time George had died in 1884 he had already purchased and leased land for use as a brickworks in the Russell/Lyal/Howick Streets section where the Bliss family were concentrated. These would later be taken over and run by his wife Hannah. These blocks of land included a brickworks, several homes, gardens which may have been used to grow vegetables for the collective family or as a market garden as a side business and another form of income.
Sometime between the end of 1892 and early 1893 Hannah moved from Russell and Lyal Streets to live at 38 Havannah Street this is described as House 8 rooms owned by a Building Company and it seems that she had sold all of her holdings in the Russell and Lyal Streets area. Hannah lived here until she died in 1904. For some reason the property can not be found in the 1901 or 1902 rates books. From 1903 to 1907 the rates books show that the house was rented by Hannah's son John Thomas Bliss and that in 1903 the Machattie family had purchased the home from the Bathurst Investment and Building Company.
