The Magic Sum of Money. To begin with, we will suppose that we ask someone to write down a sum in pounds, shillings and pence, but not to exceed ten pounds, and to make the pence less than the pounds. He is then to reverse it, and subtract the smaller of the two amounts from the greater; then to reverse the remainder and add the last two lines together. We can tell him that the final result is £12/18/11. This he finds is correct. Suppose for instance, he had written down £9/14/6. This reversed is £6/14/9. Sub tracting £6/14/9 from £9/14/6, we have as remainder £2/19/9 and £9/19/2. Add these two together, and; we shall find that they make £12/18/11. But the funny thing is that whatever the origi nal amount, the final result of the above process is still £12/13/11. THE WEEK'S MOTTO : "Don't do what you like; but like what you do " Black Opal la beginning to feel quite nervous and worried. She is certain that Helen Park, of Blaxland, was at hand; when she firmly but gently, spurned an aspiring suitor, and she thinks that Helen, just for decency's sake, drew the basket and papers instead of the abject male. 1923 'THE WEEK'S MOTTO:.', Sunday Times (Sydney, NSW : 1895 - 1930), 28 October, p. 2 Supplement: SUPPLEMENT TO SUNDAY TIMES, viewed 13 February, 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article120535266
