Exploring Colo River Valley After many exciting experiences, a party of three women and four men, some of whom are members of the Sydney Bush-walkers' Club, returned last week from an exploratory walk along the Colo River, from Newnes to Upper Colo. The Colo River joins the Hawkesbury River at Portland Ferry, just below Sackville Reach. The journey on foot was about 100 miles, of which approximately 70 miles was rough walking. It occupied 12 days. The members of the party were Miss Rene Brown, Miss Iris Rockstro, Miss Winifred Duncombe, and Messrs. N. Melville (guide), Ray Bean, F. Fuller, and W. Melville. The party travelled from Sydney to Lithgow by train, and then by lorry for Newnes. Six miles from Newnes, the lorry was stuck in sand on the bank of the Wolgan River, a tributary of the Colo. The party camped for the night, and walked to Newnes the next morning. During that day they inspected the Capartee Valley, and left Shale valley, near Newnes, at 6 p.m. The walk began in earnest next morning. The going was rough, and suitable camp sites were hard to find. To avoid a flooded gorge, the party crossed over cliffs 3100 feet above sea level. On the way down to the river again, Miss Duncombe's head was cut by a falling rock, but she continued the journey. For the last three days the party rationed its food, which had become short. They travelled from Upper Colo to Richmond by lorry and then by train to Sydney. When the foundations for the Narrabri silo were being put down sub-artesian water with a strong flow was found. 1934 'Exploring Colo River Valley.', Manilla Express (NSW : 1899 - 1954), 23 February, p. 4, viewed 9 February, 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article192360518
1934 "The Colo Gorge" (Tune: It Ain't Gonner Rain No Mo'.) 1. This is the yarn of Dunc and her friends who thought they were all very tough, When they left one day in spirit so gay to tackle the Colo rough. They were loaded with food and cameras galore, which filled their old packs to the brim, But their hearts were light though they looked such a sight, and they all were in very good trim.
2. They went for two weeks with the object in view of ambling along at their leisure, With never a though in the time so short, of anything else but their pleasure. But the vines lay thick in the vally bed, with their armour of bramble and thorn, And so in dismay they made their way, all bloody and scratched and torn.
3. There was Ninian in front and he hacked a path from dawn to the close of each day, With Dunc at the back to flatten the track and form the permanent way. While Auntie and Roxy and the rest of the gang came trundling along behind, All doing their best to survive the test and Ray to preserve his mind.
4. The days flew past and the miles cralwed by, the party getting thinner and thinner, And the day came at when they hat to fast and go without any dinner. They were down to some aspros, some tea and some rice, & it was hours since they'd last fed, When Dunc caught an eel and they made a good meal off the bones & the skin and the head.
5. At last quite exhausted they broke from the scrub like seven grey ghosts from the west, After ninety miles odd, and they thanked their God that at last they'd be able to rest. Their boots were worn from right off their feet and their clothes were hanging in tatters, But they've all stood it well, and they're back now from hell, which really is all that matters.
6. Now Dunc she has made ten new holes in her belt & Roxy's just fading away, While Auntie doesn't care how hard you may swear, so long as she can eat all day. The others are most of them pale & thin, and their health won't allow them to laugh But poor Ray Bean can hardly be seen- he's minus two stone and a half. Ray Bean had a tin plate hinged in the middle for easy packing. Mouldy Harrison visited from campfire to campfire while meals were being prepared, always with a spoon in his hand. He was a hungry-gutted lad but oh so-polite! Who could refuse him a sample of what was in their billy? This ploy no doubt lessened the amount of food he had to carry, but in the interests of further lightness he cut the handle off his toothbrush and unnecessary dangling inches off his belt and bootlaces. We really watched the ounces in those days!
In 1934 another trip of seven, with leader Nin Melville, covered 65 map miles of the Colo. The going was so rough they averaged only about 3.5 miles per day. The total cost of the trip was 36 shillings including food. This was the first time girls were recorded doing such a rough trip. They were Rene Brown, Win Duncombe and Iris Roxtro. The other S.B.W. member was Ray Bean. Their food was exhausted before the trip was over, but the girls caught a couple of eels which they ate. Few people had a car, and there were fewer roads and fire tails than today. Bushwalks were planned around the trains, and remote places like Kanangra Walls (to which there was no road) were the province only for dedicated walkers on extended trips. For instance, Tom and Sissy Godfrey were dropped near Jenolan Caves to walk to Burragorang via Kanangra-but after walking several days in the rain they were unable to cross the Kowmung, and had to walk all the way back-still in the rain. The bedraggled pair were greeted with astonishment and disdain by tourists at the Caves! In another epic described as 'sheer bloody hell', Ray Bean, Nin Melville (founder of the Coast and Mountain Walkers) and Win Duncombe took fourteen days to walk the Colo, which was in flood: they survived by eating eels caught with pegs and guy ropes. Does anyone know much about the Dungalla Club they would be willing to share ?
Question on a Forum about Bushwalking https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/aus.bushwalking/Dungallas/aus.bushwalking/QAQI5-Uz3Tc/1Qih6X54sd8J (accessed 9th Feb 2016) I am currently reading Dot Butlers "The Barefoot Bushwalker", in which she relates a journey through the MacDonnel Ranges of SA with Henry Gold and Frank Rigby, among others. This reminded mne that I own a copy of the book which was a product of this set of walks.
In the frontpiece of this book ($3.50 at the Tempe Tip second hand shop) is an inscription saying the book was presented to Paddy and May Pallin by the Dungalla Club on 26.11.75, and there is a list of some 76 names (Dot being one).
Here's a list of the names, no promises that all are correct as they are signatures not printed: Ozzie Brownlee, Hec G-------, E Kupatma---, Barry Wallace, Jess Martin, Illegible, Tom Moppet, Jack Santt, illegible, David Ingram, Dorothy Lawry, Edna Gentle (wonderful name), Joan Fitzie Savage, Mary Braithwaite, Joyce Marchant, Arthur and Val Gilroy, Brian Manney, -rede Ashley, Onawio (?)
