John Edgar Scoble

Buried in the Uniting portion of the Parkes cemetery, in the same grave as his wife, Phyl and next to his mother.

For the first time since Winifred Scoble's funeral in 1978, all the cousins were in attendance: Murray, Bronwyn, Alison, Marion, Kaye, David, Carolyn and Margaret. A photograph was taken to mark the event and is attached on file of hard copy.

Military service: Enlisted 25 July 1941 and served with the SIF in the 1st Australian Corps Sigs. Reached the rank of sergeant. Served 1159 days in Australia, 365 days overseas. Discharged 21 Jan 11946. Served in the Middle East and returned to Australia when Japan entered the war. Was based in the Atherton Tablelands, then Moritea Island to man wireless communications. On 1 Jun 1945, went to Celebes Islands.

Jack moved to Parkes in 1950 and went into partnership with Stewart Nash in the business Scoble and Nash which sold farm supplies and machinery.

Was elected to the Parkes Council in 1962. He became Mayor of Parkes in 1966, a position he retained until 1979. He was awarded the MBE in 1976 for services to locak government and the community. This was followed up with an OAM in 2002
He was involved with the Parkes Hospital Board, the RSL, Rotary, Parkes TAFE College Advisory Committee.

Jack qualified as a local preacher in the Methodist Church before leaving Canowindra before WWII broke out. He has been a Sunday School teacher, member of the choir. He also enjoyed amateur dramatics, taking part in a number of productions in Parkes.

John married Phyllis Avoca Carter on 28 Feb 1945 in Brisbane QLD. (Phyllis Avoca Carter was born on 3 Feb 1924, died on 15 Apr 2000 in Parkes, NSW and was buried on 18 Apr 2000 in Parkes, NSW.)
