" . . .a great many people think I am well in because I am steady and dont drink and so I should be if I could only get my rites what other people owe me. . . . . . . but I have spent my last shilling I never knew what it was to owe a penny to anyone and I am not going to try to borrow from one man.

S Gransden"

Inquest: Deliberate Suicide.
Dr Youl held and inquest at Port5 Melbourne on Tuesday, on the body of Samuel Gransden, seaman aged about 58. Deceased was laterly a watchman. He was a widower, and has a daughter residing in England. He was a sober and steady man, but was always supposed to be slightly eccentric. About half-past 9 o'clock on Monday night, a fellow lodger, whilst lying in bed, heard a noise, and went to the deceased's room and found a light burning and the deceased on the floor. Assistance was called, also a doctor, when it was found that Gransden was dead. A pistol was between his feet and his mouth was full of blood. A letter, written by the deceased, was found in a chest of draws in the room, in which he stated that John Sullivan owed him money, and would not repay him. The jury returned a verdict that Gransden shot himself whilst of unsound mind.

Probable that Silas and Samuel were the same person.
