General Notes:
John was a keen athlete from a young age. While in the Newtonmore Youth Club he developed an interest in ski-ing.During his National Service in the Cameron Highlanders he became the cross country ski champion of the British Army, in Austria in 1952, and then overall ski champion in Switzerland. He became a ski instructor for the Army in 1953 and was picked for the 1956 Olympic Games.He won a total of seven silver medals. After he left the Army he resumed playing shinty in Newtonmore . In 1959 he captained the Newtonmore team which won the Sir William Sutherland Cup, and completed an unbeaten season by beating Glen Urquhart in the Macgillivery League .
