Children's Hospital Ball at Sandgate The ball at tbe Sandgate Town Hall last evening, in aid of the Children's Hospital, was a great success. The funotion was arranged by the Mayor (Mr. A. W. Field) as a substitute for the usual Mayor's ball, the idea being that benefit might accrue to a charitable institution. With this object in view, Mayor Field defrayed all tbe expenses which usuully attend a ball, and in this Sense he may be said to have given it. A small charge was mado for admission, the whole proceeds of which will go to the Children's Hospital, and with the usual Government subsidy this should become a welcome addi tion to tho funds of the institution. The de- tailed arrangements of the bell, supper and so forth, were under the able direction of the mayoress (Mrs. A. W. Field), who had with her a number of ladies whose willing help greatly facilitated the numerous duties which the evening entailed. The hall had been profusely yet tastefully decorated with pot plants, shrubs, and flags, and with the bright colours of the ladies' costumes made a cheer- fully animated scene. The children who were supposed to have been in the ascendant were outnumbered by the ohildren of more mature years, but tho dancing was so arranged as to give opportunities for both. The children had their share of the pro gramme till 9.30, when supper was served to them on the stage, the adults meanwhile tripping to an "extra." After that the dances were for the adults, and except for the interval for supper, dancing was continued till about 2 a.m. Tho Mayor and Mayoress were indefatigable in the role of host and hostess. Mr. G. J. Jarrott pre sided at tho piano. The fancy costumes were not numerous, among them being the follow ing: Miss Daisy Field, Spanish girl; Mr. Harrop, court gentleman of the sixteenth century; Miss Gertrude Jackson (Sunny- bank), Scotch lassie; Miss Katy Jackson, Bopeep ; Miss Leontine Driver, bluebell ; Miss Ethel Bean, ivy ; Harry Bean, Father Christmas ; Miss Kitty Jones, Bopeep ; Miss Ethel Jones, Red Riding Hood ; Miss Dolly Jones, lampshade; little Miss Evie Jones, fairy ; Master Ben.
