A certified copy of an entry of birth obtained from the General Register Office in London, England confirms the birth of George Charles Gransden born to John Gransden and Charlotte Gransden (formally Hunt) on February 21, 1868. The place of birth was recorded as Luton Lane, Chatham. The registration district was Medway in the Sub-district of Gillingham in the County of Kent, England. George migrated to the United States from his home in England along with other family members in the Fall of 1871. Prior to departing England for the United States in the Fall of 1871, George C. Gransden was recorded in the 1871 England Census along with family members: Mother: Charlotte Gransden (born about 1835 in Sittingbourne, Kent, England); Sister Anne Gransden born early that year in Chatham, Kent; Sister Jane Gransden (Jane Hunt) born 1855 in Sittingborune, Kent; and grandmother Charlotte Hunt born about 1803 in Upchurch, Kent. George, along with brother Arthur (age 7 born in Pennsylvania), mother Charlotte Gransden and grand mother Charlotte Hunt are recorded in the 1880 Census taken on 4 June 1880. They resided at 939 Otesga Street, Philadelphia. Following is an extract from an old newspaper Death Notice clipping: "On the 7th inst., George C., son of Charlotte and the late John Gransden, aged 17 years. The relatives and friends of the family and Sunday School of Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on this Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, from his mother's residence 939 Otsego Street. To proceed to Old Swedes' Church for service and interment. The Gloria Dei Church is located at Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Christian Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147-4332.
