A Granville Footballer Killed. Jumping from a Train. An inquest was held on Wednesday by Mr. W. T. Pinhey, J.P., Deputy City Coroner, on the body of John Pickin, who was found lying in an unconscious state on the railway line at Strathfield on Monday night, and who died whilst being conveyed to the Sydney Hospital. William Pickin identified the body as that of his brother, John Pickin, a blacksmith, residing at Granville ; he was a married man, 27 years of age, and left one child ; witness last saw his brother alive on Monday night, when he was waiting for a train ; deceased was a man of temperate habits, and was sober when he (witness) last saw him. George Freshwater stated that he was on the centre platform at Strathfield station on Monday night, and saw deceased, accompanied by a woman, jump out of a train which was just starting from the station ; the train went on, and then witness saw deceased lying on the line, and the woman on the platform, both being in an unconscious state ; they were then taken on to Sydney, and that was the last witness saw of deceased alive. Charles Baker deposed to travelling in the same carriage as deceased, who was accompanied by two women, on Monday uight ; just as the train was starting from Strathfield station deceased and a woman got out, and the witness did not see anything more of them. Mary Roberts said that she was travelling in the train with deceased and a woman, and that they left the train at Strathfield by mistake, just before it started. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. 1890 'A Granville Footballer Killed.', The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1950), 4 October, p. 7. , viewed 14 Apr 2016, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article86270376
